Chapter
twenty-eight
Midnight, Leader of the Street Runners gang
As the sun rolled westward, thousands of people were dying in shopping malls across the east coast.
In almost every case, the soldiers surrounding the malls broke down and unchained the doors allowing thousands more to escape, but the magnitude of the carnage was still grotesque.
Midnight, as he was called, didnât know anything about this. He was focused on a much more immediate problem right here in Detroit - how to rid himself of Playboy, his biggest rival.
Playboy headed up the River Boys gang and theyâd been fighting a turf war for almost six-months now. It was costing Midnight dearly in lost revenue from the drug trade and, of slightly lessor importance, he was losing girls and their revenue as well.
Today was the day all that changed.
He looked up from the still whimpering bloody mess of a human being at his feet and started issuing orders.
Fortune always smiled on the bold, Midnight thought to himself. Heâd built an empire for himself by creating the reputation of being bold and ruthless. His dawgs thought him hotheaded and impulsively deadly, but heâd built his turf using his brains.
This was another example; heâd been looking for months to grab one of Playboyâs lieutenants and here he was. Now, he knew that Playboy was going to be practically alone at the Somerset Collection mall all the way down in Troy this very afternoon.
Most homeboys wouldnât venture to such a high-end collection of stores, but it was the birthday of Playboyâs best woman â and he was taking her on a supposedly private shopping spree.
Yeah, his patience had paid off but now he needed to act like he was being impulsiveâ¦

To their surprise heâd brought only three other Street Runners with him â and heâd ordered them not to wear colors. This hit wasnât going to take place in the hood. Once theyâd laid Playboy out they all needed to blend in and get the hell out of there â they didnât need to be wearing big flags that said âLook at me!â
This mall was the nicest place some of his dawgs had ever been in and he could tell they were nervous. No matter, Midnight was going to enjoy doing this himself. They were with him to observe and grow his legend as much as anything else.
Theyâd just sauntered from a department store into a busy open area when Midnight put eyes on him. He was 90% sure that it was Playboy on the other side of the food court, but he needed to see his face to be sure.
Just then there was a commotion from a third direction. What the hell? People were screaming and running past him â obviously trying to get away from something.
Just as Playboy turned around and Midnight started to smile, people on the other side of the food court started dropping like flies. It was the strangest thing; there werenât any gunshots, just a continuous burping sound. A tall guy dressed in black was shooting tiny points of light that were going right through people â even kids.
